An IMSE researcher among the authors of one of the largest Digital CSIC datasets

Gustavo Liñán-Cembrano, IMSE researcher, is listed as the main researcher and has been responsible for the technological part of a dataset with nearly one million images.

IMSE researcher dataset

After years of work and dedication, on June 11 the ecology and ornithology dataset from the Estación Biológica de Doñana (EBD) entitled Shorebirds Eggs, Nests and Incubating Behavior Image Dataset was released. It was through its publication in Digital CSIC, a multidisciplinary open access scientific repository, which contains digital documents with the results of the research work carried out in centers and institutes of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. Among its authors is the IMSE researcher, Gustavo Liñán-Cembrano, who has been mainly in charge of the technological part at the infrastructure level.

About dataset

This dataset or data set generated within the framework of the CAMNID: CGL2017-83518-P, Plan Nacional I+D+i, , contains visual information on eggs, nests and behavior during incubation of different species of coastal birds, allowing the carrying out coloration and mottling analysis, among others, for the species under study. To this end, more than 950.000 images have been included that will allow studies to be carried out on the behavior of these birds during incubation, opening up the possibility of studying various thermal stress mitigation mechanisms or male/female parental alternations during incubation depending on environmental conditions.

This document is divided into three subfolders, within which the data is grouped by species, allowing its use and management:

  • Eggs: Provides more than 900 images in RAW format in the visual range of the visible spectrum of complete eggs on a black background, corresponding to 14 different species.
  • Nests: Provides more than 800 images of nests of 6 different species, taken in their environment from 1 meter away and 70 cm high. This second set of images includes images of the nests in both the visible and near-ultraviolet ranges.
  • Incubating Behavior: Provides more than 950,000 images in jpg format corresponding to sequences monitoring the incubation behavior of 5 different species, along with information on environmental conditions.

From the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Sevilla (Universidad de Sevilla, CSIC) we want to congratulate both Gustavo and the Estación Biológica de Doñana for this virtual collection that undoubtedly represents an advance in the study of ecology and ornithology in our country.
